He grinned. ā€œI love these things. Better than sex.ā€

I raised an eyebrow. ā€œIf thatā€™s true, you havenā€™t been doing it right.ā€

through such a horrific experience. Your ex should be strung up by his balls on a rusty hook and dangle from the ceiling.ā€

He gave me a ghost of a smile. ā€œThatā€™sā€¦creative.ā€

My little brother complained that I was a fuddy-duddy at the ripe old age of thirty-five. I never dated, never did anything fun, as far as he was concerned. Only thing I did was work. Oh, and hound his ass about staying in school and cleaning up his damn, funky room. Had our parents been like that when they were still alive? Itā€™d been so long ago, I barely remembered.

As I answered a cheeky text from the runt, whoā€™d just gotten home from his summer job at the local fair, I heard the door to the classroom open. I looked up and saw the art teacher enter the room, even better-looking in person, and a smile that would make even the most hardened cynic melt.

That wasnā€™t me, though, nuh-uh. I was completely in control of my reactions and was only here to prove a point to my pain in the ass sibling.

Yup.

My baby brother tricked me.

Okay, so it wasnā€™t quite a trick, but, heā€™d somehow shifted his piss poor efforts at getting better grades into, ā€œoh, well you never finished high school so why should I?ā€ after which I reminded him that I got my diploma last year. And then he said, ā€œWell why canā€™t I do the same thing?ā€ And I retorted, ā€œBecause you can do better than that. I want you to have a chance at something good, not become a grease monkey like me.ā€

After that, heā€™d crossed his arms, narrowed his too-sharp brown eyes and told me Iā€™d have to do something really big and outside my comfort zone for him to agree, something Iā€™d never do in a million years, just to prove that I was serious about him finishing school. Naturally, he came up with the most embarrassing thing possibleā€”being a nude model for his best friendā€™s brotherā€™s drawing class for the rest of the summer.

Here’s a snippet from “All A Steer Can Do Is Try,” published by JMS Books. Clifford (first person) has just returned to the resort where he met the love of his life, Jet. Bambi, Clifford’s Corgi, is in this scene, too. šŸ™‚

Bambi barked happily when she spotted Jet coming around the side of the building, his arms full of neatly folded towels. As the window was down, her friendly greeting was heard by her other favorite human, and Jet looked up in shock.

I witnessed those poor towels fall to the ground and get trampled in Jetā€™s haste to get to us. I let Bambi out of the car before she tried to jump out the window and hurt herself.

By the time I made it into Jetā€™s arms, Bambi had been greeted heartily and had scampered off to reacquaint herself with the resort. I jumped into his arms, legs locked around his waist, as I greeted him as though weā€™d been apart for eons instead of just a week.

Happy weekend! It’s warm here and I am recovering from a long week. Hope you’re well!

Here’s a snippet from “Dion’s Redemption,” published by Less Than Three Press.

“To what do we owe this honor, Mr. Doukas?”

I tried not to fidget where I stood. “Dion, please.”

“Greek, right?” Mr. Flannigan asked, and I nodded. “Well, you’ve never been the visiting kind in all the time I’ve been here, unless it had to do with maintenance or rent problems. So it’s either my health, or my grandson. Which is it?”

Those pale eyes I’d thought tired and worn were suddenly sharp and focused. “Uh,” I began, but Nolan cut me off.

“Ignore him, Doukas. He has old-fashioned ideas. He forgets I’m close to thirty and more than able to handle myself as an adult, despite what he thinks. Isn’t that right, old man?” I could hear the easy affection in his voice and felt a pang for what I’d never known.

“You sassing me, boy?” Mr. Flannigan said.
